Altair session[edit | edit source]

01 \ You can create diversions with dead bodies. Soldiers will leave their posts to investigate them, allowing you to enter the area they were guarding.

02 \ You can use stealth kills to create a distraction by lobbing a Throwing Knife, pushing somebody off a roof, or performing a Stealth Assassination.

03 \ Should you cause a disturbance, it is wise to leave the area in order to avoid upsetting civilians further.

04 \ Preparation is crucial to your success. Clear the area of Archers and Guards before confronting your Assassination Target.

05 \ Climb tall structures to gain a bird's eye view of your surroundings. Tall buildings can be used to orient yourself when moving through a city.

06 \ Ladders are a Socially Acceptable way to reach a rooftop. Climbing on buildings, however, is not.

07 \ Should you enter a Fistfight, guards will not interfere. But drawing your weapon will turn them hostile.

08 \ Take your time. When moving slowly, you reduce your chances of attracting unwanted attention.

09 \ When the Animus shows you are being watched by an Informed Guard, you should Blend immediately. Even the slightest disturbance will attract his attention.

10 \ Use the Scholars you have rescued to pass unnoticed into guarded areas.

11 \ Use Vigilantes you have freed to block your pursuers and break their line of sight.

12 \ Liberating Informers within the Kingdom will give you useful information about the cities.

13 \ When you’re out of Throwing Knives, refill your stock by returning to Masyaf or Pickpocketing Thugs (also known as Courageous Citizens).

14 \ Jar (and Crate) Carriers can easily break your cover if you cause them to drop what they're carrying.

15 \ Remember to reach out for ledges should you fall while climbing.

16 \ Use the action view to gather information about your surroundings.

17 \ When you have been exposed to the Guards, break their line of sight and try to hide from them. Stay hidden until you are Anonymous again.

18 \ When you have been Exposed, killing some of your pursuers will make it easier to escape.

19 \ When you are Exposed, Tackle people who are in your way to maintain momentum and utilize your Sprint ability when the path is clear.

20 \ When you are Exposed, throwing Soldiers from rooftops and into structures is a useful way to create an escape route.

21 \ Use Free-stepping to escape from a fight when Exposed. Sprint to lose your enemies and Jump through merchant stands to avoid the crowd.

22 \ When you are Exposed, use sharp turns or climb over buildings to break your pursuers' line of sight.

23 \ Countering a strong attack will leave your enemy vulnerable. Finish him by breaking his legs or by throwing him to the ground.

24 \ Selecting the Hidden Blade during a fight will allow you to quickly dispatch an enemy you've thrown to the ground.

25 \ The Short Blade is best for quickly fending off multiple enemies.

26 \ Using combo attacks or finishing moves will increase your Synchronization rate.

The first modern sewers in any city were built along the river Thames. Begun in 1859, with 82 miles of sewering, at a cost of £4.2m, they were formally opened in 1865 by the Prince of Wales.

The world's first underground railway line opened in 1863. The trains were divided into first, second and third classes, lit by gas which was stored in rubber bags on the top of each carriage.

The first official map of London, in 1850, the Ordnance Survey, produced by army engineers, filled 847 sheets of paper; when it was reduced for publication, it was too small to be read.

Many of London's rivers were built over in the 19th century. The Westbourne was culverted, now running through a metal box that can be seen by passengers waiting for the Sloane Square tube.

In 1855, 13 slum houses in Covent Garden were cleared out, filling 150 cartloads with dung from the cesspools, 350 cartloads with unspecified waste, and 1 ton purely of insects and vermin.

In 1840, a system of universal postage was created: a letter sent anywhere in the country cost 1d. Houses got 6-12 deliveries a day, and a letter posted at 1.30 arrived an hour or so later.

There were dozens of types of beer, including porter, stout, fourpenny ale, a 'small' (weak) beer, and cooper, half porter, half fourpenny ale, both of which cost 4d. a quart in 1860s.

London Bridge had granite parapets with recesses over the piers holding granite seats. Visitors had a wide view, with Tower Bridge not yet built, and Southwark Bridge still much smaller.

Private contractors brought 'dust', or garbage, to huge sorting heaps, where 'hill-women' picked through it to separate rags, food, bones, metal, offal, paper, wood & glass, for re-sale.

Thousands of working people were displaced to build the railways: behind Westminster Abbey 200 houses were demolished, and 2,500 people left homeless, to build Victoria Station.

Pubs employed pot-boys to walk the streets with wooden boxes holding different types of beer, selling to householders along their route, who leant out their windows and shouted, 'Beer!'

The fly-catcher man sold flypaper, advertising by wrapping it, stuck with flies, around his hat, or carrying a newspaper, black with flies, attached to a stick, waving it like a flag.

At mid-century there were 12 London pubs named Adam & Eve, 8 named Noah's Ark, 70 Crowns and 70 King's Heads, 50 Queen's Heads, 12 Prince Alberts, 6 Shakespeare's Heads, and 10 Robin Hoods.

Market streets were hard to navigate: the busy Newgate Market had only 2 access roads, both only 10 feet wide, while carriages measured 7 feet across, and often carried 2 tons of meat.

Near the pay-window at many workplaces was a desk where workmen could immediately pay into their 'Yard Club', a sick-benefit society, run by the workers themselves.

Street-sellers congregated outside big workplaces on payday, selling "relishes" such as herring, shrimp, watercress, or clothes, tools, books and newspapers.

In the 1860s, London was a building-site, with more than 10% of all adult males working in construction trades. 38% of England & Wales' architects worked in London, 40% of its surveyors.

Every August the wealthy all left London for the country. Those selling services – tailors, fancy grocers, tutors – luxury shops (and prostitutes!) had a hard time of it every year, making no money that month.

Workers commuted by omnibus, by steamer along the 'silent highway' – the Thames – and by 'shank's mare' or 'the marrowbone stage', that is, they walked for miles twice a day.

The most popular preacher of the day was Charles Spurgeon, whose Metropolitan Tabernacle in the Elephant & Castle held 4,000, entering through 15 doors to a tiered, galleried venue.

As well as food, street-sellers sold brickdust and sand, for cleaning pots and pans, doormats, brooms, sieves, penknives, rhubarb (for constipation), boot-laces, notebooks, pins, ink, toys, fire-irons and more.

Street-sellers used to sell services—knife-sharpening, pot-tinkering, chair re-caning—or buy goods: old clothes, rags, bones, manure, or food waste, to sell to pig farmers.

Food was sold widely on the streets: fresh peas from the country, hot muffins, rabbits ready for skinning, baked potatoes, sandwiches, pies, fruit, nuts, eels, whelks, oysters and more.

In most pubs, if you wanted to eat, you bought a chop or piece of meat beforehand at a butcher or cookshop and gave it to the landlord, who would have it cooked for you over the fire.

Newspapers and books were sold with uncut edges; railway bookstalls sold folding paper-knives for readers on the trains. You could also borrow books from station shops, returning them at your destination.

In the 1860s, the Serpentine, running through Hyde Park, was supposedly a river, but in fact a sewer emptied out there, and the water was a mix of mud, human waste, eels and fish. Boys still swam there happily.

In 1861, a fire on the south of the Thames spread over 11 acres and burned for nearly 3 weeks. Fat running out of warehouses set the Thames on fire as far as Kent.

'Model' housing built by companies for their workers was not always 'model'. The Great Eastern Railway was found guilty of letting flats to 100 residents with no access to water at all.

Many of London's prisons had nicknames: Coldbath Fields was the Steel, short for Bastille, Newgate the Stone Jug, Milbank the Tench, for penitentiary, Horsemonger Lane the Old Horse & Tothill Fields the Tea Garden.

King's Cross station, built on the site of a fever hospital, replaced a temporary station of 2 wooden platforms in 1852. It had 24 trains a day, 12 'down' (into London), 12 'up' (out of London).

Children sold watercress door-to-door before breakfast. They often walked another 2 hours to where it was grown instead of the markets, to cut out the middleman & make an extra 3d. a day.

Boys ran behind omnibuses leaving the railway stations, at each stop hoping to carry the bags of a descending passenger home, sometimes running 4 miles, all for a penny tip, before returning to the station.

In 1864 tollgates and bars across main roads to London, charging up to 6d, were abolished. There were still tolls on the suburban roads: a penny for a horse, or 2d. for a horse & cart.

On 10 January 1863, the world's first underground railway opened, running from Paddington to Farringdon Street. 50,000 people tried to travel that day, but only half managed to do so.

A family of three living in the slums had a room 7 x 6 feet: they made wooden splints used in pubs & cigar-shops as matches. It paid enough for 2 meals a day, and a fire on Sundays.

A swell mobsman was a well-dressed pickpocket who worked in places of public entertainment. A rampsman was a burglar, a drummer drugged his victim, a shofulman made counterfeit coin.

Pubs were sited to serve commuters: on the corners of main roads for walkers, at depots for those on buses. Many London tube stations still have pub names: Royal Oak, Angel, Swiss Cottage.

Early trains did not have connecting carriages, so tickets could not be checked by conductors on board. The train stopped on a viaduct & the conductor walked along outside.

Costers spoke in their own slang: on was no, say, yes; a yenep a penny, a flatch, a halfpenny; if you were flatch kanurd, you were half-drunk. Nomuss! was 'Be off!'

Hackney coaches, which were cabs for hire, were notoriously slow. The joke was that if anyone was asked "Coach, sir?" the reply was, "No, thank you—I'm in a hurry."

Gas street-lights were lit individually. Lamplighters carried a ladder, climbed up, turned the stopcock, held a light to it, climbed down & moved on to the next, before turning them off the same way next morning.

Highways were constructed by man power. Newly laid macadam was compressed with iron cylinders hauled by a dozen men, then 'setts' (cobbles) were hammered in by men working in unison.

In 1867, a woman died at an underground station. The inquest verdict was: 'Death from natural causes, accelerated by the suffocating atmosphere of the Underground Railway'.

When the new hansom-cabs arrived in the 1830s, the older hackney-coaches were nicknamed growlers, for the bad-temper of their drivers. Hansom-drivers, by comparison, were 'sports', or cheery.

Fire-engines were driven at the fastest pace possible, about 10 miles an hour, if the fire was within a few miles. If it was further, the horses would tire and had to be paced more slowly.

Basim session[edit | edit source]

In 921, Ahmad ibn Fadlan travelled form Baghdad to central Russia where he met a mysterious Northern people. He was the first Muslim scholar to make an account of their strange habit of burning their dead kings with their ships.

Al-Khawarizmi was a House of Wisdom mathematician best known for giving his name to the notion of "algorithm", his work on algebra (al-jabr), and his diffusion of the Arabic-Indian Numeral system.

The Abbasids were descendants of al-Abbas, the uncle of Prophet Muhammad. This lineage (and their military might) helped them serve as Caliphs, or Muhammad's successors, from 750 to 1517.

Between the assassination of al-Mutawakkil in 861 and the ascension of his son al-Mu'tamid to the throne in 870, four Caliphs reigned from the palatial city of Samarra as puppets of powerful military factions.

The Banu Musa invented a human-like automaton for Caliphal parties. Filled with wine, after a time it would release its liquid onto the person unlucky enough to be holding it, much to the amusement of the other guests!

Hidden Ones operate out of Bureaus. These are hidden from sight and accessible only by members of the organization. Each Bureau is helmed by a Rafiq.

The sprawling offices of the Round City hosted an increasingly centralized administration. As its master, the Vizier was both an essential servant and a potentially deadly enemy of the Caliphs.

Introduced to Baghdad from China and Central Asia at the end of the 8th century, cheap paper quickly replaced costly parchment and lead to the emergence of a strong reading culture in the Abbasid empire.

Animals featured heavily at court: flocks of hunting falcons, silk-clad elephants and a monkey dressed as a general were trained to provide exotic entertainment to the palace guests.

Ascribed to a divine being, the title "Father of Understanding" dates back to Isu times and reflects the Order of the Ancients' mission to guide humanity towards their idea of enlightenment.

The Muslim calendar starts with the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622. Mirage is therefore set in the 3rd century After Hijra (AH). As of September 2023, we are in 1445 AH.

Baghdad was built from scratch between 762 and 766 at the order of Caliph al-Mansur. At first only the Round City was planned, but soon densely populated areas sprawled beyond its walls.

Abbasid glasswork was considered valuable throughout Europe and Asia. It has been discovered in 9th century royal burial sites in Korea as well as on a Carolingian brooch recovered from the Ballycottin bogs (Ireland).

Far from being the steamy brothel often described in western culture, the harem was first and foremost a space dedicated to child raising, poetry writing, and political rivalry.

The Hidden Ones were founded in Egypt in 47 BCE. Working in the dark to serve the light, the organization aims to fight oppression and to safeguard the people's free will.

A highly advanced civilization, the Isu lived on Earth around seventy-seven thousand years ago and were the original creators of humanity.

Inspired by Indian and Persian literature, the "1001 Nights" was created in 9th century Baghdad. Book critics of the time found it crude and unimaginative, predicting it would fail to attract any attention.

Baghdad was sacked by the Mongols on February 10th, 1258. Killing people and burning books, they are said to have created "streams of blood and rivers of ink", destroying most of the pre-1258 city in the process.

The caravanserai was a "palace (saray) for groups of people (karvan)". But most caravanserai looked more like empty shells in which travelers could find safety for the night, share news... and pay taxes!

Aiming to achieve order and control over the masses through any means possible, the Order of the Ancients was founded in Egypt in 1334 BCE by the Pharaoh Smenkhkare.

Each branch of the Order of the Ancients has several prominent Members. These lead their own sub-branches, and are themselves led in turn by a single Head of the Order.

During Caliph al-Mamun's wedding in 825, perfumed shells containing the names of prizes were distributed to the guests. Whoever received one was then given what was written on it, be it a small item or an entire town.

Poetry schools competed for the attention and the patronage of the Caliphs. The ultimate prize? To have the ruler tear off a part of his silk-embroidered clothing and throw it at the poet!

The Order of the Ancients intend to use these ancient and elaborate pieces of Isu technology to control the population and revive the Isu.

The initiation ritual for becoming a Hidden One involves the sacrifice of a ring finger. Its removal ensures space for a retracted hidden blade, but is also a tribute to Bayek of Siwa, the original Hidden One.

Baghdad's environment was almost devoid of building materials and most of its houses were made of dried or baked mudbricks. This meant that its buildings had to be partially rebuilt after every storm.

In Baghdad, perfume was used in food, ink, and even mosque-building. One of the most sought-after perfume ingredients was Indian ambergris, a solid substance found in the digestive system of sperm whales.

From China to Europe, medieval merchants travelled on a network of routes collectively known as "the silk road". Set in the middle of this network, Baghdad served as one of its main hubs and hosted many of the world's most exquisite creations.

"The Accounts of China and India" recounts the five-month journey of Sulayman al-Tajir from Baghdad to Guangzhou in 850. He is one of the earliest named people to have travelled that far for trade!

Known as Eagle Vision, Odin's Sight, Eagle Sense and other names through the ages, this extrasensory ability is a manifestation of a strong Isu gene concentration in an individual.

The original Hidden Ones had two tenets to their creed: to work in the shadows and to only kill those who deserved it. A third tenet, to never compromise the Brotherhood, was added later.

In the Caliphal Palace stood a large tree made of 1400 kilograms of silver, its branches crowned with mechanical birds. The leaves appeared to move with the wind and the birds to burst into song whenever ambassadors appeared in front of the Caliph.

Arabic language names are based on a chain of names systems, with each part having a meaning. Calling the Caliph Harun al-Rashid "Mr. Rashid" would therefore have been a terrible mistake.

The Zanj were enslaved persons taken from south-eastern Africa and used for harsh manual labor on sugar cane plantations. Their revolt between 869 and 883 decisively weakened caliphal power.

Naoe and Yasuke session[edit | edit source]

Yasuke can move crates that stand in his way.

Observe [L2] allows you to spot and identify targets from your various Objective Boards.

Stay on the lookout for grappling points in your surroundings to bridge certain gaps or to get out of trouble.

Use the Bow for a stealth approach, or the Teppo for a more brutal one.
