Talk:Nan'an
About the exact location of Nan'an[edit source]
I attempted to edit the page as it seems to have some information that needs to be corrected, but my revision was undone by staffs. So I'd like to talk about it here and really appreciate your opinions.
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China and Assassin's Creed: Blade of Shao Jun both features Nan'an(南安) as a location where Wang Yangming is killed by Zhang Yong in January 9th, 1529. Considering when and where he died, it is highly likely that Ubisoft intended to create this event based on the actual history. The following is what Chinese Wikipedia says about Wang Yangming's death in his real life.
嘉靖七年十一月二十九日(1529年1月9日),王守仁病逝於江西南安府舟中,享年五十六歲。
On 29th day, 11th month, 7th year of Emperor Jiajing's reign(January 9th, 1529), Wang Shouren(=Wang Yangming) died of illness on a boat in Nan'an Prefecture, Jiangxi Province at the age of 56.
It is clearly stated that Nan'an is a prefecture(府), located in Jiangxi. However, the in-game database describes other Nan'an, which is a county-level city, not a prefecture, located in Fujian. Here's the comparison:
- The name Nan'an Prefecture was abolished by Republic of China and replaced by Ganzhou City.
| Name | Origin | Address (in 1529) | Current Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nan'an(南安) | Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China | 大明福建等處承宣布政使司泉州府南安市 (Nan'an City, Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, Great Ming) | 中华人民共和国福建省泉州市南安市 (Nan'an City, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, People's Republic of China) |
| Nan'an(南安) | Where Wang Yangming died in actual history | 大明江西等處承宣布政使司南安府 (Nan'an Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, Great Ming) | 中华人民共和国江西省赣州市 (Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, People's Republic of China) |
You can tell the difference by just comparing the locations via Google Map. I think it's necessary to inform viewers of this error. How about putting a sentence something like this in Behind the scenes?
- In Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, Wang Yangming is depicted as he died in Nan'an located in Fujian Province. In real life, however, he actually died in Nan'an Prefecture, Jiangxi Province.

- The revert might have been because "behind the scenes" sections are meant to be formatted in paragraph form not bulleted list (we know this is inconsistent on the site and is slowly being standardized). Or it could have been reverted as this might be more applicable to Wang Yangming's article. I will check with the editor that did the original undo edit. - Hello Police85000, I actually did revert your edit just because it was incorrectly formatted, as behind the scenes sections do not use bullet points. It was my bad for being hasty and not seeing that your edit was more than just reformatting and for not leaving an edit summary.
- Your correction itself is good information for the article to be included in the section. However, I'm honestly not very comfortable with figuring this out based only on consulting Wikipedia. Our wiki has often used Wikipedia as a source for basic information, but I think when we clarify lore errors and correct historical information, our research should ideally be higher quality than just what we got from Wikipedia. So if you are able to track down a more authoritative source, that would be wonderful. I can try to search Chinese Text Project tomorrow.
- Nan'an was likely a common placename historically, so it won't be surprising for the database entry's author to have made a mistake. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 11:35, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for reading my opinion! Here are some sources that support the statement that Wang Yangming died in Nan'an Prefecture, Jiangxi Province:
- Wang Yangming, Britannica:
- Wang Yangming (born 1472, Yuyao, Zhejiang province, China—died 1529, Nan’an, Jiangxi) was a Chinese scholar-official whose idealistic interpretation of neo-Confucianism influenced philosophical thinking in East Asia for centuries.

- On 25th day, 11th month, (7th year of Emperor Jiajing's reign,) the boat crossed Meiling Mountain and arrived at Nan'an, Jiangxi. Zhou Ji, the prefectural magistrate, heard that the master had arrived and came to pay his respects. Yangming sat up, coughing and wheezing, saying that "My disease is very serious, and the only reason I have not died is my vitality." Due to the sudden worsening of the disease, Yangming stayed in Nan'an for five days and could not move forward. At noon on 29th day, he called Zhou Ji to the boat, but he could no longer speak. After a long time, he opened his eyes, looked at him, and said, "I am leaving." Ji cried and asked, "What are your last words, sir?" Yangming smiled slightly and said: "My heart is bright, what else is there to say!" Soon, he passed away with his eyes closed.

- The second source looks good. Feel free to add back this information to the article while citing it. Just remember not to use bullet points. :P Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 17:42, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
