The Convent Garden, now Covent Garden, is a district in London, England.

History[edit | edit source]

Originally a garden belonging to Westminster Abbey, the land was tilted and worked by the Abbey's monks, until the land was seized by King Henry VIII in 1536. The land was granted to John Russell, though he showed little interest in the land and left it unattended. In 1627, Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford inherited the land and hired an architect to design and build a piazza on the property, which was completed in 1631.[1]

The earliest reference to Covent Garden as a market dates back to 1654, and for roughly 16 years, it was an informal organization with other activities also taking place on the property. In 1670, King Charles II formally granted the Earl of Bedford market rights, allowing the landowner to profit from the business there.[1]

The Covent Garden Market was moved to a new location south of the Thames in 1974.[1]
