The Caelian Hill (Latin: Collis Caelius, Italian: Celio) is one of the seven hills of Rome. During the Renaissance, it was located in the Antico District.

History[edit | edit source]

According to a tradition recounted by Titus Livy, the hill received its name from Caelius Vibenna, either because he established a settlement there or because his friend Servius Tullius wished to honor him after his death. During the Republic era, the Caelian Hill was a fashionable residential district, housing the villas of Rome's wealthy citizens.[1]

Archaeological work under the Baths of Caracalla uncovered the remains of lavish villas complete with murals and mosaics. The Caelian is also the site of the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the ancient Basilica of Santo Stefano Rotondo, known for its centralized, circular plan.[2]

During the Renaissance in the early 16th century, the Crows prepared a large weapons shipment and delivered it to the hill, to a Borgia camp near the Colosseum. The Assassin Lo Sparviero, tasked by Niccolò Machiavelli to track down the weapons, travelled to the camp and used his Eagle Vision to find a crate marked with the Assassin insignia by Assassin scouts. The crate was empty, so he found another crate containing several strange blades. He then set out to track down the person behind it all.[3]
