Uesugi Kenshin
- "Wars are to be won with swords and spears, not with rice and salt."
- ―Uesugi Kenshin.[src]
Uesugi Kenshin (Japanese: 上杉 謙信; 1530 – 1578) was the head of the Uesugi clan and a member of the Templar Order. One of the most powerful daimyō of his time, Kenshin ruled Echigo Province. In addition to his skill in battle, Kenshin was also a gifted administrator who greatly expanded industry and trade in his province.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Life as a Templar[edit | edit source]
When the army of fellow daimyō Takeda Shingen neared Echigo, Kenshin moved to halt their advance. He fought Shingen's forces to a stalemate at the Battles of Kawanakajima, starting a fierce decade-long rivalry between the two daimyōs. The mutual enmity ended when Shingen was assassinated in 1573 over possession of his Sword of Eden.[1]
Kenshin joined the Templar Order after the arrival of the Europeans in Japan and was subsequently killed by the Assassin Hattori Hanzō in 1578.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 1582, the samurai Yasuke overheard two rōnin speak of Kenshin while he was at Okunoin Cemetery seeking Kumabe Ujiie. The men praised Kenshin's command over cavalry and claimed that, after his impressive display of leadership skills at Kawanakajima, even the defeated Takeda clan would agree.[2]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Historically, Uesugi Kenshin died of esophageal cancer in the spring of 1578.[3]
