The Tianyan Stone (天衍石; Mandarin: Tiānyǎnshí) was an artifact with the power to enhance an individual's strength.[1] It was the heirloom of a youxia disciple of Wei Yu and eventually became the last vestige of their family.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

As their family heirloom, Wei Yu's disciple carried the Tianyan Stone on their waist at all times in their activities as a youxia.[1] In 215 BCE,[3] the stone protected the disciple's life when they were disarmed in a duel against Meng Tian. Having been invited into the Qin grand general's service, they had instead lashed out against another officer, Yang Duanhe, on sight because they recognized him as the murderer of their sworn brother. Meng Tian intercepted the attack, and although the disciple defeated his guards, the general eventually disarmed them and knocked them the ground.[1]

Just as he moved in for the kill, the Tianyan Stone activated and imbued the disciple with such strength that they were able to deflect his blade with their dagger. Stunned by this turn of events, Meng Tian ceased hostilities, apparently having recognized the artifact and its association with Wei Yu, whom he respected as a former comrade-in-arms against the Xiongnu. The disciple acknowledged their relationship to Wei Yu, and on that basis, Meng Tian was willing to rekindle their cooperation with one another and permit them to act covertly against Yang Duanhe thereafter.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Tianyan Stone was a plot device in the closed beta test of the upcoming game Assassin's Creed: Jade, but it only appeared briefly in the main mission "A Modest Invitation", within a narrated segment used as a placeholder for an eventual cutscene. Its nature and properties hitherto remain unrevealed beyond that it enhances the protagonist's strength according to the narrated scene and that, according to a loading screen tip, it is the protagonist's heirloom.
