Lawrence Cato was a member of the Colonial Brotherhood of Assassins under Achilles Davenport during the Seven Years' War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During the Colonial Templars' orchestrated Assassin purge that lasted from 1757 to 1763,[1] Cato escaped by running away and disguising himself as a peddler,[2] which became permanent to prevent his Assassin affiliation from being exposed during this period when the Templars held dominance across the American colonies. In the early years of the American Revolutionary War, Cato joined a spy ring led by Jeremiah Scudder that was allied with the Patriots.[3] Over time, he learned that Scudder to be a Templar who had been using his spy network to supply the Templars with information during the war.[2] Cato could do little to stop him since the British Army officer Richard Prescott captured him in 1777 and kept him in Prescott's residence on Rhode Island.[3]

Later that year, a group of Continental soldiers led by William Barton raided Prescott's residence alongside the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton. Ratonhnhaké:ton found Cato in the cellar and questioned his presence and identity. Cato revealed his affiliations to the Brotherhood, with the Kanien'kehá:ka following suit as well.[3]

Regrouping in Newport, Cato revealed to Ratonhnhaké:ton how he was able to escape the Templar purge a decade ago and joined Scudder's network. When Ratonhnhaké:ton was skeptical of Scudder's identity as a Templar, Cato asked him to check the evidence and told him of Scudder's plan to leave the colonies by ship, taking a load of Templar artifacts along with him. Cato directed Ratonhnhaké:ton to the courtyard behind City Hall, where he could find the ship's purser and cut off the Templar's escape. Cato later took his leave, stating that he was never a very good Assassin and no longer had the skills to fight.[2]
