Viana Castle

The Viana Castle was a large fortified stronghold in Viana, Kingdom of Navarre, which was conquered by Spain in 1512. In 1507, the castle was held by Louis de Beaumont at the time that it was besieged by Cesare Borgia and King John's army of 10,000 men.
History[edit | edit source]
Following his escape from Valencia, Cesare Borgia allied himself with his cousin-in-law, John III of Navarre. John III tasked Cesare to besiege Viana and its fortification in 1507, due to his military expertise.[1] However, the Italian Assassins' Mentor Ezio Auditore was tracking Cesare during this period, and eventually located him in Viana.[2]
Following Ezio was a team of Italian Assassins consisting of Alessandra d'Avanzago, Bastiano da Mezzo, Dariâ, and Claudio, who were tasked with creating a diversion to distract the Templars long enough for their Mentor to enter the fortress, though they were captured by a patrol and locked up in the castle's jail. As there were no senior Assassins nearby, apprentices were sent to infiltrate the castle and rescue them.[3] Under the cover of night, the Assassins infiltrated a building used by Cesare's guards, and killed them in their sleep. They also sabotaged Cesare's pistol, thus removing a risk to their Mentor.[4]
Ezio fought his way through the castle's exterior fortifications, where he encountered Cesare, who managed to escape. The Mentor then mounted Viana Castle's walls by climbing a siege tower, where he found Cesare on one of the castle's battlements, leading to a duel between the pair.[2] Concurrently, the other Assassins robbed the castle's treasure room and armory during the confusion in order to deprive the Templars of resources.[5] Following Cesare's defeat and demise at Ezio's hands, John III's troops eventually abandoned their attempt to take the castle, ending the siege.[2]
