Abingdon is a market town on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In the late 9th century, the settlement was visited by the Viking Geirmund Hel-hide and his company during their march to divert Alfred the Great's attention from Guthrum's army. The Hel-hides dressed as trolls and monsters to scare away the population. They met with a single guard who had remained behind and Geirmund warned him that the Danes were coming, after which the guard fled.[1]
