"I don't know if Heaven or the Devil sent you, Connor, but you're a good man to have on our side. Go."
―William Barton to Ratonhnhaké:ton, 1777.[src]-[m]

William Barton (1748 – 1831) was an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Biography

Born in 1748, William joined the Continental Army once he was able and by 1777 held the rank of Lieutenant. That year, he was assigned to locate and capture the British general Richard Prescott, who was based in a farmhouse in Rhode Island. Unable to find any leads, Barton enlisted the aid of the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, an ally of the Continental Army, to contact a spymaster in Newport named Jeremiah Scudder, who had Prescott's schedule.[1]

Having obtained the information, Ratonhnhaké:ton presented Prescott's whereabouts and on 10 July, Barton led a group of around forty men including Jack Sisson and Ratonhnhaké:ton to infiltrate the Prescott Farm from the sea, guarded by a British Man O' War. Ratonhnhaké:ton helped the American forces sabotage the ship and putting out the signal flame, allowing Barton and his men to dock. Ratonhnhaké:ton asked Barton and his men to remain quiet and interrogate a captured British soldier while the Assassin continued on to clear path for them. Barton agreed and entered the dockhouse with his men to interrogate the soldier. Once Ratonhnhaké:ton had cleared a path, Barton and his men sneaked into the house and captured Richard Prescott.[2]
