Tarik Barleti was the Captain of the Janissaries during the early 16th century.[1]

History

Attack on Suleiman I

In 1511, Tarik became very distrustful of Ahmet, Suleiman's uncle. Tarik saw Ahmet not fit to lead, much to Ahmet's anger. As Ezio Auditore spied on this encounter, he concluded that Tarik had ordered the assassination attempt on Suleiman in order to make Ahmet look weak. As Ezio brought this news to Suleiman, he was tasked to ensure Tarik would not succeed.[1]

Templar association and death

Tarik came into contact with Manuel Palaiologos and Shahkulu, both of whom were members of the Templar Order. Ezio observed this meeting while tailing Tarik, at the request of Prince Suleiman. Believing Tarik to be a Templar, Ezio infiltrated the Janissary camp, and air assassinated Tarik while disguised as a Janissary.[1]

Near death, Ezio was proved wrong of accusing him of treachery, for Tarik was preparing an ambush to strike Manuel, Shahkulu, and other Byzantine Templars "when they felt safest". Ezio did not believe him at first, but the dying Tarik produced a document that would eventually lead Ezio to the Byzantines in Cappadocia and urged him to destroy them. Ezio relented and begged for forgiveness. Tarik simply pleaded for Ezio to protect his homeland in God's name and to redeem the honor they he had lost in this fight. Tarik had even gone as far as to send an envoy to Cappadocia. One of which included a woman named Dilara, who posed as a slave, though she was also secret a love interest of Tarik's. [1]

Last Words

  • Tarik: Ah, what a bitter irony. Is this the result of Suleiman's investigation?
  • Ezio: You collude with the Sultan's enemies. What did you expect would come of such treachery?
  • Tarik: I blame myself. Not for treason, but hubris. I was preparing an ambush. Preparing to strike the Byzantine Templars where they felt safest.
  • Ezio: What proof do you have of this?
  • Tarik: See here. This will lead you to the Byzantines in Cappadocia. Destroy them if you can.
  • Ezio: You have done well, Tarik. Forgive me.
  • Tarik: Protect my homeland, Assassin. Allah ashkina (In God's name), redeem the honor we have lost in this fight.
