Samhain is a yearly festival that is held on the evening of 31st of October and continues onto the first of November.

History

In 31 October 856, ealdorman Simkin and his fellow constituents of Glowecestrescire celebrated the Samhain festival and prepared the Wicker-Man, due to Simkin's duty to burn within it. Before committing himself to self-sacrifice in the Wicker-Man, he gave the ealdorman's crown and guardianship of his daughter Brigid to his successor, Cynon, who vowed to continue the alliance between the Christians and pagans in the community.[1] After Simkin burned inside the Wicker-Man, twenty years passed with good tidings within the shire especially between the leaders Cynon and the druid priestess Modron, who raised their daughter Gwenydd.[2]

In 31 October 876, the Samhain festival was held again as Cynon's time of burning with the Wicker-Man came too. However, his successor Tewdwr preached a new Christian path, which worried Cynon and Modron and the future of the shire and their daughter. So, with the arrival of Brigid's fiance Gunnar and his guest, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, Modron devised of a frame job of Tewdwr being murdered by Eivor. After Eivor played her part of being the Mari Lwyd and later drinking alongside Cynon, Tewdwr, and Gwilim, the next day found her alone in Tewdwr's house[1] and being accused of killing him.[3]

However, their plan was figured out by Eivor,[2] who then saved Tewdwr from Modron, who planned to sacrifice him for a better future of her shire.[4] After saving Tewdwr, the burning of the Wicker-Man followed as Eivor ganered an ally in Tewdwr and with Glowecestrescire.[5]

Behind the scenes

Historically, the festival represents the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.[6]
