Richard Prescott (1725 – 1788) was a British officer who fought during the American Revolutionary War, holding the rank of Lieutenant General.

During the war, Prescott was once captured[1] by the Continental Army in 1775, but was then released in exchange of General John Sullivan.[2] By 1777, Prescott was placed in command of 4,000 thousand troops in the city of Newport in Rhode Island. Within the state, he based himself in a farm orignally owned by a Loyalist named Henry Overing, where he was only protected by a few people.[1]

In July, Prescott became a target of the American general William Barton, who sought to exchange him for general Charles Lee, the second-in-command of the Continental Army under George Washington.[3] With help of the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, the Americans were able to uncover Prescott's location and stage an infiltration operation. Prescott was cornered in his manor, with his guards either killed or captured. Left with little choice, Prescott was taken away[4] and eventually exchanged for Charles Lee.[2]
