Omaki (お牧,[1] died c. June 1579)[2] was a daughter of the Takeda clan daimyō Takeda Yoshimune in Wakasa and, through her marriage into the Akechi clan, the mother of Akechi Mitsuhide.[3]

Biography

In 1579, when Oda Nobunaga attacked Hatano Hideharu in Yakami Castle for breaking his surrender to Nobunaga's general Mitsuhide and the Oda clan, Mitsuhide sent his mother to Yakami as part of a hostages exchange.[4] However, when Hideharu brazenly requested an audience with his rival, Nobunaga killed him, an act which made the Hatano clan execute Mitsuhide's mother in retaliation. Mitsuhide held Nobunaga responsible for her death[5] and festered a years-long resentment towards him that culminated in his attack on Nobunaga at Honnō-ji temple in 1582.[6]

Behind the scenes

Omaki is never referred to by name in game, only by her relation to Mitsuhide. However, she is historically recorded to have been known as Omaki or Omaki no Kata.[1] This would not have been her birth name but a courtesy name used in polite society. Her manner of death is anecdotal and the veracity of it is in question.[1][5]
