Liberation is a 2012 video game developed in partnership by Abstergo Entertainment and Ubisoft. The game follows the story of Aveline de Grandpré, daughter of the wealthy French merchant Philippe de Grandpré and his placée bride Jeanne.[1]

Compiled from recordings collected from Subject 1,[2] the game presents a very idealized and censored view of Aveline's life, portraying her as a traitor to the Assassin Order; in response to this, the hacking collective known as Erudito actively worked to re-introduce the truth into the game, allowing the player to view the full extent of Aveline's genetic memories.[1]

Despite Erudito's actions, Liberation was considered such a success that it prompted Abstergo Industries to expand their entertainment branch to Montreal and hire research analysts for their next project.[3]

Trivia

  • Advertisements for Liberation were routinely displayed in the Abstergo Entertainment offices in Montreal.
  • Liberation is the in-universe counterpart to the real world video game Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, released by Ubisoft.
  • In the Abstergo Entertainment research analyst's Employee Passport, the game was referred to as Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, despite there being no other known Assassin's Creed games that would have preceded it.
  • Álvaro Gramática, Isabelle Ardant, Warren Vidic, and Alan Rikkin were part of the production team.
  • The credits have the game titled Assassin’s Creed Liberation.
  • The credits say that the game was an Abstergo Industries production, even though it is later credited to Abstergo Entertainment. Also, the Abstergo Entertainment logo is shown at the beginning of the game.  
  • Other developers included Jean-Pierre Fournier, Steve Gerkin, Stacy French, and Suzuki Fumito.
