Joyeuse was a the legendary personal short sword used by the Frankish king Charlemagne. Made with a gold and gem-encrusted hilt, the blade was forged from the same metal that made Durendal, a sword wielded by the heroic paladin Roland. Adding to it's fabled stature, the pommel of Joyeuse was further believed to contain the head of the Holy Lance, the spear that pierced Jesus of Nazareth as he was crucified.[1]
In 885, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found and claimed the weapon for herself while aiding Rollo's efforts in laying siege to Paris.[1]
