The Almogavars were fairly uncommon guards that appeared in Constantinople and Cappadocia during the Renaissance. Roughly comparable to the Brutes from Rome, they fought with heavy weapons, were rather slow compared to other enemies, wore thick armor, and could not freerun. Like the Varangians, the Almogavars were employed by the Byzantines. They are featured in several missions, and were scattered all over the underground city of Cappadocia.

Trivia

  • The Almogavars were historically soldiers of Aragonese and Catalan origin. They were known to have worked as mercenaries for the Byzantine Empire.
  • The Almogavars, like the Janissaries – except in some missions – are always found carrying the same weapon: the Almogavar Axe.
  • The Almogavar Axe can also be used as a weapon, after completing The Champion, Part 1 memory.
  • It is peculiar that Almogavars use heavy weapons in-game, as they used lances and spears historically, a fighting style which is more similar to that of the Seekers than the Brutes.
  • Some courageous Templar Den Captains look and fight like Almogavars. Some cowardly Captains also look like Almogavars.
  • Unlike Brutes in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Almogavars can be killed with a counter if their attack is not the overhead smash.
  • Almogavars seem to have a unique weakness to Datura Bombs, as evidenced from both Piri Reis: Datura and usual gameplay; the poison kills them about twice as fast.
