This article is about the primordial Greek deity. For other uses, see Gaia.
Gaia, also spelled Gaea, is the Greek personification of the earth, the Mother Earth. She is considered a primordial deity, mother to all living things, with the Olympian pantheon counting her in their ancestry. Her Roman counterpart was Terra.[1]
History
In the myths, Gaia was the first possessor of the Oracle of Delphi, before granting it to the Titan Themis, who in turn passed it onto the god Apollo after he slew the Python.[2]
Trivia
- The name of the deity is the Greek word γαῖᾰ (gaîa), which means 'earth', and poetically 'land'.
