The Freemasons were a fraternal organization formed in the late 16th or early 17th century.

During the American Revolution, some of the most prominent leaders of the revolutionary forces and the Continental Army were Freemasons.^[1]

Trivia

According to the lead writer of Assassin's Creed III, Corey May, the game will have a very accurate depiction of the Freemasons.
