Şehzade Ahmet.

Ahmet (1465 - 1513) was an Ottoman prince (Şehzade) and the oldest son of Bayezid II. He was also the uncle of Suleiman I "the Magnificent".

Biography

Born as the eldest son to Beyazid II and Bülbül Hatun, he was trained as provincial governor in Anatolia. During his father's later years, he was considered the crown prince and supported by grand vizier Hadim Ali Pasha. Pasha died when Ahmet left the battlefield during the Shahkulu Rebellion when, instead of fighting, he tried to rally his troops towards his cause for ascension.[1]

In the year 1511, Şehzade Ahmet became acquainted with the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze.[2]

During the traditional race to reach Istanbul during the final years of the sultan's reign, Selim was found out of control by his father and defeated. However, when Ahmet tried to get to Istanbul, soldiers blocked his way because of his prior incompetence. When his father abdicated over Ahmet's capture and rule of another province, Selim became Sultan.[1]

Ahmet met his death in 1513 after an unsuccessful attempt to unseat his brother on April 24th of the same year.[1]

Trivia

  • His title 'Şehzade' (from Persian word: Sheikhzadeh) means 'Son of the King' as Sheikh means 'King' and Zadeh means 'Son of'.
