Critias (c. 460 BCE – 403 BCE) was an Athenian poet, philosopher and politican who served as the leader of the Thirty Tyrants which ruled Athens after the Peloponnesian War.
During the Tyrant's rule, Critias often clashed against fellow member Theramenes, with whom they shared contrasting views on running the government. Eventually, he turned on him during a dispute over Polemachus and attempted to have him assassinated. Although this was thwarted with the help of the misthios Kassandra,[1] Critias later forced Theramenes to commit suicide via poison.[2]
