Chepeham

Chippenham (Old English: Cippanhamm), alternatively Chepeham, is a village and the county town of Hamtunscire, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In 878, the Battle of Chippenham took place in this very village, where the Vikings of the Great Heathen Army led by Guthrum won a victory over Alfred the Great's forces of Wessex. King Alfred retreated and hid from the public eye for a time as a result,[1] taking refuge with a farmer couple in the village of Athelnay.[2]
