Despite owning a globe-spanning empire reaching Africa, India, and even China, Portugal's presence in the New World was restricted to Brazil by the Treaty of Tordesillas. This was an agreement brokered by the Papacy that purported to divide up the world between its loyal Catholic subjects of Spain and Portugal. By 1700, Portugal was in decline, but a gold rush in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro region throughout the 1720s saw a surge of slaves and settlers there.
