The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale.[1] Found in oceans and seas around the world, it is known for emitting complex sequences of haunting moans. The humpback is a large whale up to 19 meters (62 feet) long. They migrate from the poles to the equator seasonally and travel in pods.[2]

During the Golden Age of Piracy, humpback whales were hunted in the Caribbean Sea by pirates such as Edward Kenway, who used their skin to craft ammunition pouches.[3] Edward's former quartermaser, Adéwalé, inherited this practice even as an Assassin of the West Indies Brotherhood.[4] The French pirate Alonzo Batilla also occasionally hunted the whales during his travels.[5]
