Gil Vicente (c. 1465 – c. 1536) was a Portuguese playwright and poet.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

On May 1519, Vicente was at the Castelo de São Jorge rehearsing with his theater troupe when he was approached by an Assassin asking about Vasco da Gama.[2] Vicente was forthcoming with information, saying that da Gama had been an avid theatre goer, but had stopped watching plays some time ago. He also mentioned that after being quite impressed with one of his plays, the old explorer had given Vicente a piece of a map with the trajectory of his fabled trip to Calcutta in thanks, which he handed to the Assassin.[3]
