Professor Zachary Morgenstern is an employee of Abstergo Industries' Cryptology department.

In October 2016, after Simon Hathaway had relived the memories of his ancestor Gabriel Laxart when he saw Jacques de Molay's scribblings using Eagle Vision. Knowing of Zachary's love of decoding ancient symbols, he was recommended to decipher them.[1] A couple of days later, however, Morgenstern stated via a video conference call with Hathaway that he had never gotten any simulation files from Dr. Bibeau to whom Hathaway had said sent them. Although he and his department knew about the graffiti from a previous simulation, no files pertaining to Hathaway's session had turned up. After Hathaway went quiet upon learning of this, Morgenstern asked if he wanted him to follow up, which Hathaway refused and ended the call.[2] Another few days later, Morgestern's unawareness of the subject was later brought up within the Inner Sanctum of the Templars by Hathaway to the Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin.[3]

Personality and traits

Zachary Morgenstern was described as having a "kindly visage."[2] He was noted by Simon Hathaway as enjoying analyzing ancient graffiti.[1] Rikkin told Hathaway that Morgenstern could, "could talk [his] ear off" regarding anything related to cryptology.[3] Hathaway also wasn't sure of Morgenstern's personal allegiance to the Templar Order, as they were so secretive that not even members could tell each other apart.[4] He did however, hold Morgenstern in high regard as he was trusting of him to decipher the de Molay graffiti.[1]

Etymology

Zachary is an English masculine personal name derived from Zacharias which is the Latin form of the Hebrew Zekharyahu (זְכַרְיָה) meaning 'Yahweh has remembered' from the Hebrew elements yahu (־יהו) "Yahweh, God" and zakhar (זֵכֶר) "to remember".[5] The surname Morgenstern is derived from the Middle German words morgen meaning 'morning' and stern meaning 'star'.[6] Morgenstern is also the weapon known in English as morningstar.
