William "Bill" Miles (born 1948) was a high-ranking member of the Assassin Order, who had become the de facto leader of the Assassins by 2012.

Initially training recruits in a remote Assassin base known as the Farm, William eventually relocated to the Assassin headquarters, where he regularly kept the teams informed about the situations of the others through e-mails.

He had one son, Desmond.

Biography

Early life

William was born into the Assassin Order. In 1987, his son Desmond was born.[1]

Around this time, William lived in the Farm with his wife and son, and thirty or so people. He trained Desmond extensively, insisting to him the importance of being careful, and of being ready for an attack from their enemies at any time.[1]

However, this paranoia and caution only led to Desmond thinking his parents were "conspiracy freaks," and eventually led to him running away from home when he was sixteen.[1]

Researching Cross

In 1998, William was contacted by Paul Bellamy to look into Daniel Cross' involvement with the Assassin Order. After having done some research, he discovered that Daniel's ancestor was the Assassin Nikolai Orelov, as well as found some records about Nikolai's mission to Tunguska.[2]

Italy Assassin team

In 2012, William relayed information to the Assassin team in Italy through Shaun Hastings, and requested that he forward it to the other team members. He also had a conversation with Lucy Stillman about the condition of his son - who had been suffering from the Bleeding effect - in which he said that they had to keep going, as they needed the location of the Apple of Eden.[3]

Upon beginning to relive the restored memory sequence from 1506, Desmond received an e-mail from William telling him that the memory sequence he had found would lead them to some information that the Assassins required. Though Rebecca would be sending all the information directly to him, William also cautioned Desmond not to tell the other members of his team for the time being.[4]

At the end of the memories, Leonardo da Vinci and Ezio Auditore found another Vault in Rome, located beneath the Pythagorean Temple. When Ezio's DNA activated a pedestal, the room projected a set of coordinates: 43 39 19 N 75 27 42 W.[4]

Once the sequence was completed, William instructed the other man to sedate Desmond, though it was too late; Desmond had entered a coma. Despite this, William was confident that his son would recover, and he and the other man then left in order to investigate the coordinates.[4]

Monitoring Desmond

Sometime between 2001 and 2012, William became the Mentor/Leader of the Assassin order. Following the events in the Colosseum Vault, William and another unidentified person found Desmond in shock, and decided to return him to the Animus to prevent any further harm his mental state. Though Desmond faintly protested this, he was placed in the Animus anyway.[3]

William then transported Rebecca Crane and Desmond to New York, while Shaun stayed behind to attend Lucy's funeral. William examined the Apple of Eden, but didn't believe he had the genes to properly wield it, while Desmond did. Upon arrival, William helped Rebecca stabilize Desmond, as well as monitor his vitals. While watching over Desmond, William asked Rebecca and Shaun about him, such as what his relationship had been with Lucy. He also mentioned that Desmond's DNA had a high potency of First Civilization DNA, allowing him to wield the Apple of Eden. He also discussed with them their next move, and how to transport Desmond in his comatose state.[1]

When his son finally woke from his coma, William was the first to greet him, with Desmond seeming surprised to see him, but recognizing him immediately.[1]

Hunted by the Templars

Meanwhile, Abstergo had been tracking William for some time, as they knew he had become the leader of the order. Once William's location became known, Warren Vidic and Laetitia England assigned an Abstergo recruit to assassinate him.
