The Wave Lover, also called Wave Humper by the crew,[2] was a snekkja-style longship that belonged to jarl Guthrum.[3]
History
Guthrum used the ship when visiting Norway to recruit Norsemen into King Bersi's army. Though he only managed to recruit three people, thanks to the fears of war with Harald Fairhair in the near future, the Wave Lover had enough crew to row to England, after a short stop in Jutland.[2]
On the way to England, it got caught on a strong storm and captain Rek, who already held animosity towards Geirmund Hel-hide, blamed the Norseman and proposed he be sacrificed. Geirmund's oath-man and friend Steinólfur opposed and threatened to fight any who tried. Seeing no other way to keep the peace and not wanting Steinólfur and their companion Skjalgi to die, Geirmund jumped into the sea.[4] The rest of the crew managed to reach England unscathed after the incident.[5]
