The Varangians were guards in Constantinople. Similarly to the Almogavars, they were Byzantine guards. They acted much like the Seekers in Rome, as they fought with halberds and spears. They also wielded pistols that they could use when disarmed or when Ezio escaped to somewhere they could not follow.
Trivia
- Historically, the Varangians were Scandinavians, and from the 9th to 14th century, served as the personal guard of the Byzantine Emperor, functioning similarly to the Janissaries, who were the personal guard of the Ottoman Sultan.
- In the artbook of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, concept art of the Varangians show that they were supposed to wield one handed swords, just like any normal guard. Also in the artbook, they were labeled as "Paranoid" instead of Varangians.
