Ashdown was an open field near the village of Moulsford, famous for the Battle of Ashdown.

History

Following a failed attack at the Dane encampment at Readingum, King Æthelred I of Wessex and his brother Alfred desired to draw out the Danes from their fortifications to an open field battle in Ashdown.[1] Though they suffered many losses, the Saxons conquered the field at the end of the day, while the Great Heathen Army was forced to retreat.[2]
