Yavuz Sultân Selim Khan, entitled Hâdim-ül Haramain-ish Sharifain, also known as Selim I, Selim the Grim and Selim the Steadfast (October 10, 1470 – September 22, 1520) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 until his death in 1520.
Selim was the youngest living son of Sultan Bayezid II. He decided to secretly gain the support of the Janissaries in order to ascend to the rank of Sultan, because being the youngest son granted him little hope of rising to Sultan by himself. He was a fierce and determined man, hungry for war and loyal to the Ottoman Empire. He was eager to see his father's Empire expand into all of the known world.[1]
After a long and hardy war with his father, Sultan Bayezid II finally retreated the throne and Selim was named Sultan. In 1512, as newly-appointed Sultan, Selim marched towards Constantinople, finding his brother Ahmet facing off against the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Sofia Sartor. Selim, revealing that his father had ultimately chosen him as his successor, started strangling Ahmet and eventually pushed him off a nearby cliff, killing him. Selim's reasoning behind this was because of Ahmet's betrayal of the Ottomans when he formed an alliance with the Byzantine Templars.[2]
Selim turned to Ezio Auditore, who had watched the scene unfold, and told the Assassin that his son Suleiman spoke quite highly of Ezio. It was only for his son's respect for the Assassins that Selim spared Ezio's life, and he told Ezio to get out of Constantinople and not return. Ezio responded by pointing his sword towards Selim's throat but was stopped by Sofia, and Selim continued his march towards Constantinople laughing.[2]
Selim's reign was the first reign in the history of the Ottoman Empire that the next Sultan was chosen by the Janissaries and not the current Sultan.
