Scorpion Reef is a reef in the Gulf of Mexico containing a small group of islands, located near the Yucatán Peninsula.
The reef claimed the lives of many shipwrecked sailors, while offering pirates refuge for the storms and from the law.
In 1716, the novice pirate captain Alonzo Batilla stole a schooner called the Wanderer with the help of his fellow pirate Olivier Levasseur. The former then proceeded to plunder a Royal Navy brig with his new vessel, and undertook various races and deliveries in the area.
