Sandarach

Sandarach, also known as Realgar, is an arsenic sulfide mineral of orange-red coloring. It was used in medicine, as well as a pigment in both painting and fireworks at the time of Renaissance.

Members of the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins were known to extract sandarach from silver and gold and mix it with verdigris and chalk to create blinding powder.[1]

Other materials also receive the name sandarach or sandarac, such as red lead and resin obtained from the tree Tetraclinis articulata.[2]
