Peleus was the mortal king of the Myrmidons and as the husband of the Nereid Thetis, the father of the hero Achilles in Greek mythology. He was also the brother of Telamon and thus the uncle of Ajax.
During the Peloponnesian War, a xiphos which had allegedly belonged to Peleus was kept in a chest in Artemisia Fort on the island of Kos. The Spartan misthios Kassandra claimed the sword for herself when she infiltrated the fort.[1]
