Nijō Castle

Nijō Castle is a castle in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.

History

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe aided the shinobi Gennojo on their plan to secure the rice storage and re-distribute it back among the locals. Secretly, they infiltrated but Gennojo caught a statue of the goddess Kannon and shouted in anger. When Naoe approached him, he told her that she did not protect his parents and blamed her for not protecting them from his overseer Tatsugoro. Then, the samurai Tatsugoro came out and revealed that Gennojo stole a katana from him and it led to his parents' demises.[1]

Just as Gennojo was about to attack, Naoe stopped him, told him to find the rice, and confronted Tatsugoro herself. Despite his reinforcements, Tatsugoro was defeated by Naoe but she later saw Gennojo in front of the storage, filled with explosives, with a bomb. Telling him to stop, Naoe tried to persuade him to not use his bomb but Gennojo saw corruption as endless and how he was not worth living. Before Naoe could respond, Gennojo dropped the bomb and blew the storage and himself up. Saddened, Naoe left the palace.[1]

At some point, Naoe and fellow Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke infiltrated the castle together, assassinated two of its samurai daisho, looted the Protector's Armor from its treasure chest, climbed atop the tenshu to survey the land,[2] and collected one of Kanō Eitoku's paintings.[3]

Behind the scenes

In the memory "The Twisted Tree," the player is given a choice where to find Takahashi Shiro, either within the castle or in front of his father Takahashi Inoshichi's home if Inoshichi was killed first.[4]
