==History==
Mohandas Gandhi was born in Porbandar, a small costal town of the previous Bombay Presidency, British India. Mohandas was a devout Hindu, due to his father belonging to the Hindu Modh community. At only 13 years of age, Mohandas wedded Kasturba Makhanji, and lived with her and their four sons happily for the rest of his life. In 1888, Gandhi traveled to London to study Indian law at University College London. Due to his knowledge of the law, Mohandas was able to fight for independence in South Africa and India. Additionally, because Mohandas was a strong believer in non-violence, he was able to gain favor in the rest of the world, whereas the violence of the British only proved to be detrimental to their control of India.
Mahatma Gandhi was not only able to briefly unite Muslims and Hindus in South Asia, but he also managed to gain independence for all of South Asia. Unfortunetly, Mohandas's idea of a unified state between Muslims and Hindus did not last after his murder in 1948. Discord errupted between the two religious groups, and ended with the Muslims forming their own country (Pakistan) and the Hindu population keeping India for themsleves.
