The Bayou was a marsh-filled area near New Orleans, which held little dry ground.
It was inhabited by smugglers and other outcasts, and alligators had a notorious reputation for attacking unsuspecting prey from the banks, or beneath the murky waters. As such, this made trees both a faster and a safer option for travelers navigating the area.
