Mengele was a notorious member of the team of doctors responsible for the selection of victims to be killed in the gas chambers and for performing deadly human experiments on prisoners. In September 1942, while attending a party at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics, Mengele met Eddie Gorm, a British defector and a rising star among the SS, who unknown to him was in fact a spy of the Americans. During their talk, Mengele informed Gorm and Otto Hammerstein of his excitement about his progress on the Übermensch, the superman, thanks to the help of General Gero Kramer, before telling Gorm that his superior wanted to meet him.
