Jack Sisson (c. 1743 — 1821) was a former African-American slave who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography

In 1777, Sisson was part of a group of soldiers led by Colonel William Barton to capture the British Army general Richard Prescott in Rhode Island.[1] With aid from the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton,[2] the Patriots were able to locate Prescott's location in a Farm and led a raid on the site,[1] with Sisson acting as pilot of the leading boat.[3] The operation was a success and resulted in Prescott's capture, and was exchanged for General Charles Lee.[4]

After the raid, Sisson enlisted in the recently reorganized Rhode Island Regiment, which largely comprised of African slaves and Native Americans in segregated companies. Unlike the rest of the recruits who were granted freedom at the end of their service, Sisson remained and fought throughout the war, taking part in the Battle of Rhode Island and later the Battle of Yorktown. He eventually died at the age of 78.[3]
