The Hidden Gun is used for long range kills, as well as assassinating targets (especially useful for moving ones). It isn't stealthy, as using it near a group of guards will likely attract attention as it makes a loud, musket-like sound once the trigger is pulled, however it is a one shot kill, provided it hits. The downside is it takes a good deal of time to aim (it can be used without aiming, but you will most likely miss even at close range); the aiming consists of four lines converging together and accuracy depends on how long you spend aiming. Aiming the gun around guards will make them suspicious.
The Hidden Gun provides the deadly effectiveness of the Hidden Blade, but at long range. Though an excellent weapon for assassination from afar, it will give away the player's position immediately after firing, creating a loud noise that will alert an guards within the area. The Hidden Gun takes several seconds to lock onto a target, and the player is shown how far they are in the process by four lines that come closer together until the converge into a single line, signaling that it is fully aimed. Firing before a lock is acquired and may provide a hit, though the chances are less likely with the less time was spent aiming. It should be noted that aiming the Hidden Gun within guards' lines of sight will make them suspicious of the player. Against a few guards, aiming the gun for more than several seconds will also cause the group to lose morale and eventually flee, though this tactic will not be successful on Brutes.

The special attack of the Hidden Gun does nothing noticeable and does nothing at all against large groups of guards. Against one or two guards, aiming the gun for more than two seconds after it is locked will cause them to lose morale and flee. This does not work against Brutes. Instead, you can just kill the highest ranking guards (Brutes and Seekers should be your first targets) to cause enemies to flee.

The Hidden Gun does not work as "one-shot kills" when battling against Rodrigo Borgia (but can easily be used to assassinate him the first time) or Dante Moro (the first time you battle him; last time it does).

The gun, along with the Throwing Knives, are sometimes disabled while in the Assassin's Tombs, this may be to stop the player shooting the guards that they must chase, therefore skipping large sections of narrative.
The Hidden Gun does not kill in a single hit to either during the battles with Dante Moro and Rodrigo Borgia, though it is just as effective as usual when the player is required to assassinate them. The Hidden Gun and Throwing Knives are disabled in the Secret Locations that require the player to chase an Agile, as said weapons would allow the player to kill the Agile before the intended time in the course and would eliminate the entire chase altogether.

―Leonardo da Vinci

After discovering the design for it on one of the Codex Pages, Leonardo da Vinci managed to craft one for Ezio in Assassin's Creed II. It is unlocked right after you finish Sequence Eight. The weapon will return in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in both single and multiplayer.
