The Forest of Pholos is a forest southeast of the polis Elis in the region of Elis, Greece. In Greek mythology, the forest was the home of Pholos, a centaur and a friend of the hero Herakles.
History
In the legend, Herakles met Pholos in the forest during his hunt for the Erymanthian Boar. When Pholos opened a jar of wine, the fragrant odor drove the nearby centaurs mad and attracted them to his location. Herakles fought and killed all the centaurs, including Pholos.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War the forest was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra in search of Myrto, the daughter of the Elean hunter Akatos. Kassandra sent the girl home, helping her collect deer necks.[2]
