The Erymanthian Boar was a legendary boar which inhabited the western Erymanthos Foothills in Elis, Greece.
History
Myth
In the myths, bringing down the Erymanthian Boar was the fourth of the twelve labours performed by the legendary hero Herakles. On the way to meet the Boar, Herakles met Pholos, a centaur.[1]
5th century BCE
A namesake of the mythological beast, the boar was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra at some point during the Peloponnesian War. Kassandra looted its pelt and returned it to Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis, in the Temple of Artemis in Phokis.[2]
Place
The beast's lair was simply known as its location, for the Boar was ferocious. It had taken over a fortified camp, slaying and driving away the campers.[2]
