Biography
Early life and career
Alvarez was born on 14 May 1981 in Haute-Vienne, France.[1] He graduated from the University of Limoges in 2001 with a degree in commerce,[2] though upon completing this course, he felt that art was his true calling. [citation needed] He then later graduated from School Émile Cohl in 2008 with a Master's degree in Concept Design. During this time, he worked freelance for Eden Games on various projects, including a joint university project with Unreal Engine in which he received a Distinction grade. Alvarez began his career with Ubisoft shortly after graduating, where he worked for a year before pursuing other freelance projects.[2]
Assassin's Creed
By 2009, Ubisoft impressed with his style and art, actively sought to have him work on their Assassin's Creed series. [citation needed] Alvarez served as a concept artist and level artist for Assassin's Creed II, focusing on Ezio's Villa, Florence, and Venice.[2]
In 2010, he worked on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Multiplayer, creating concept art, roughs, and 3D art for Castel Gandolfo, San Donato, and Alhambra. Folllowing this, in 2011, he contributed to Assassin's Creed Revelations Multiplayer with concept art, roughs, and 3D art for Knight Hospital, and as a level artist for Hippokratus.[2]
In 2012, he worked on the multiplayer of Assassin's Creed III as a concept artist and owner level artist on Northwest Passage, and as a level artist on Animus Core.[2] A piece of art he did of an imagined Space Age Assassin was compiled into the Carte Blanche of the Assassin's Creed: Encyclopedia.[3] He again worked on multiplayer concept art for the 2013 released Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Alvarez worked on the concepts of many playable maps present in the multiplayer mode such as; Saba Island,[4][5] Portobelo,[6][7] the Prison,[8] and rejected concepts for a map in Zanzibar,[9] and one centered around a ghost ship.[10]
In 2014, he contributed as a concept artist on Assassin's Creed: Unity, mainly focusing on concept art for the Café Théâtre including the exterior and its upgrades,[11][12] as well as the trophy rooms props and central statue,[13][14] the hall upgrades,[15] and Arno's study.[16] Alvarez also created a piece of concept art of the Tour St Jacques.[17] That December, VG247 showcased many of the concept art behind Unity, Alvarez's being included. His and the other concept artist's art were praised as the one amazing thing of a technically broken game. All the shown concept art and more were compiled in The Art of Assassin's Creed: Unity published by Titan Books.[18]
In 2015, he worked as a concept artist on Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. He created several pieces of concept art on the dual protagonists' Train Hideout.[19][20][21] Included were also details of the train's interior; the Assassination wall,[22] Jacob and Evie's personal carriages,[23][24] as well as the workshop carriage used for crafting.[25] Syndicate was Alvarez's last Assassin's Creed game he worked on, but not his last Ubisoft title.[2]
