Critias (c. 460 BCE – 403 BCE) was an Athenian poet, philosopher, and politician who served as the leader of the Thirty Tyrants who ruled Athens after the Peloponnesian War.[1]

During the Tyrant's rule, Critias often clashed against fellow member Theramenes over contrasting views on running the government.[1] Following a dispute over Polemachus, Critias attempted to have Theramenes assassinated. Although this was thwarted with the help of the misthios Kassandra,[2] Critias later forced Theramenes to commit suicide via poison.[3]
