Brass knuckles are a class of melee weapon shaped to fit over the user's knuckles with a view to increasing the force applied through a punch. Despite their name, the weapon was made out of various materials other than brass. Due to increasing limitations and regulations regarding weaponry, particularly during the Victorian era, it was considered less acceptable to openly carry arms of any kind, even for personal defense. To balance the need for protection while still abiding by the law, the streets of London saw increased usage of close-combat weapons like brass knuckles.[1]
Despite its unassuming appearance, brass knuckles could be extremely lethal in the hands of an expert, the weapon's shape being intentionally designed for violent close-quarters combat. It's primary function was the concentration of a punch's force over a small area, increasing the chances of causing grievous injury, including, but not limited to, blunt trauma, severe tissue damage and fractured bones. The shape also directly benefited the user, as the rounded grip dispersed the counter-impact of the blow across the palm rather than the fingers, reducing potential damage to the digits.[2]
In 19th century London, the British Assassins Evie and Jacob Frye used them to great effect in their quest to wrest control of the city back from the British Templars under Crawford Starrick, providing powerful, brutal strikes to their enemies.[1]
