A eunuch is a man who has undergone castration. Eunuchs would usually be servants or slaves who had been castrated to make them reliable servants of a royal court.[1]

Notable eunuchs

During the reign of Pharaoh Ptolemy XII Auletes in Egypt, the eunuch Pothinus served as one of his advisors alongside Achillas, Ganymedes, and Theodotus of Chios. As Pothinus was secretly a member of the Order of the Ancients, after Auletes' death in 51 BCE, he manipulated Ptolemy XIII into exiling his sister and co-ruler Cleopatra to claim the title of Egypt's regent.[2]

Gao Lishi and Bian Lingcheng were high-ranking eunuchs in the Tang courts of Empress Wu Zetian and Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, in addition to being members of the Golden Turtles, the Chinese branch of the Order of the Ancients.[3]

Zheng He was captured by the Ming dynasty at an early age and served as a court eunuch. After contributing to the defeat of the Yuan dynasty, he was offered a governmental position and became an admiral and a diplomat. He was appointed to lead a large fleet to the Western Sea and embarked on several expeditions which led him to Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, more than half a century before those of the more famous European navigators.[4]

The Eight Tigers of the Zhengde Emperor's court, almost all of whom were Chinese Templars, were a group of eunuchs famous for their rise to power, ruling in the stead of the Jiajing Emperor,[5] and their purge of the Chinese Assassins.[6] The Assassin Shao Jun, who survived the Tigers' purge, would eventually track down and assassinate most of the group's members during the early 16th century.[7][8][9][10][11]

In 1757, Jim Holden was captured at the Qasr al-Azm palace in Damascus, while he and Haytham Kenway were trying to rescue the latter's half-sister, Jennifer Scott.[12] Holden was subsequently taken to the Abou Gerbe monastery in Egypt, where he was forced to undergo an operation to become an eunuch before being buried in sand. Haytham rescued his friend several days later and vengfully set fire to the monastery, killing the priests who had performed the operation.[13] Despite this, Holden remained deeply traumatized and eventually took his own life in January 1758.[14]
