Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria. During the reign of the Emperor Maximilian I, it was the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
History
In the early 16th century, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze sent his Assassin recruits to Vienna to turn Maximilian against the Borgia in Rome. They knew Maximilian had taken a beating from Swiss mercenaries during his last war, and discovered they were working in the Papal Guard.[1]
Shortly after, they found the mercenaries' leaders in a tavern, where they joined them and managed to poison their drinks after they had gotten them drunk, knocking them out. Following this, the recruits carried their victims to Maximilian, who was angered at first but had expected it. With this, he paid the Assassins well, and cut his funding to the Borgia while he investigated the incident.[2]
The Swiss mercenary leaders were later employed as trainers by Maximilian, who also asked the Assassins to tutor his men. The Assassins accepted the offer, though they dressed up as condottieri to prevent anyone from discovering their real affiliation. Together with one of Maximilian's best knights, they trained the Landsknechte, and Maximilian promised them that they could call upon his best men if they ever needed them.[2]
Modern era
By the mid-19th century, the Irish Assassin Oscar Kane founded his business after making a few lucrative deals.[3] However, he betrayed the Assassins and started to work with the Austrian Rite under the name, the "Magus," to learn their new inventions while providing information on his fellow Assassins.[4][5] In 1852, he received Simeon Price, using the alias "Jack Straw," and soon became his mentor.[3] While training and equipping Price,[6] he and his apprentice were soon invited to a winter hosted by Baron Julius Jacob von Haynau.[7]
At the party, Kane and Price met with the baron, his lawyer Karl Mayr, and Countess Konstanze von Visler. However, the party took a turn for Kane and his apprentice, once Simeon had to save Kane from Mayr. Quickly, Simeon used his razor, killed Mayr, and saved his mentor. After leaving the party, Kane revealed that the baron and his lawyer were Templars and they hid in plain sight to find an advantage over them.[7] After the party, Price soon informed Hungarian tailor and friend János Libényi that Mayr's extortion had ended.[8]
By 1853, Kane and Price soon joined the Countess von Visler at her house to view her invention and Kane's power cell. After the demonstration, Price deduced the countess was a Templar as Kane explained that they were hiding in plain sight. After a brief conversation with the countess, Price left the party and headed onto the streets of Vienna. However, he soon caught sight of the butcher and acquaintance Joseph Ettenreich running through a crowd. Soon, Simeon saw János with a knife as he quickly attacked Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.[9]
Quickly, Simeon and Joseph subdued the tailor, who was soon taken to prison for his attempt on the emperor. After speaking with Margit Libényi, Price asked Kane to help and break out Libényi and he agreed. However, their rescue attempt proved futile as Price was arrested as the tailor was hanged for his crime.[10] Meanwhile, the Aurora Equestrian Troupe made their way to the capital where its acrobat Pierrette Arnaud performed her act and looked for Simeon. The act worked as he pushed his way to see Arnaud, only to be stopped the ringmaster, Major Wallin.[11]
Luckily, Arnaud had Wallin release Price as they talked about their late friend, Ada Lovelace, and her last wishes. Promising to help, Price took Ada's notes from Pierrette to see if he can trust Kane to help.[11] However, from recent events, Price felt uneased with Kane's responses and chose not to seek his help. He soon met with Arnaud and told her he cannot help and wished to break contact with her. However, Arnaud promised to find the Magus herself and took the notes back. After meeting with Pierrette, Price told Kane he had to leave and find himself as Kane reluctantly agreed to his leave. However, while leaving, Price soon realized from their conversation that Kane knew Price's real name.[12]
Still in Vienna, Arnaud returned home, only to find her room at the troupe ransacked. Realizing someone was after Ada's notes, she hid them into one of her corsets and convinced Wallin to start traveling again.[13]
Between the years 1858 and 1861, Arnaud and Price met again during the bombings against French Emperor Napoleon III[14][15] and figured out that the Magus was Price's former mentor, Kane. Soon, they traveled to Vienna, only to find Kane's businesses gone and closed down.[16]
