The Ashikaga shogunate (足利幕府) was the feudal military government that ruled Japan from 1336 to 1573, from their seat of power in the capital of Kyoto.

The shogunate was established after Ashikaga Takauji was appointed Shōgun following his overthrowing of the Kenmu Restoration in support of Emperor Go-Daigo.[1] The Ashikaga shogunate collapsed with the advent of the Ōnin War (1467-1467) which led to the Warring States period, a period in which the shōguns were empoverished and essentially powerless, both politically and militarily.[2] The shogunate came to an end when 15th shōgun Ashikaga Yoshiaki was overthrown by Oda Nobunaga in 1573, following an attempted rebellion.[3]
