Varangian

The Varangians were guards in Constantinople and Cappadocia. Similarly to the Almogavars, they were Byzantine guards. They were the equivalent of Seekers in Rome, as they fought with halberds and spears. They also wielded pistols that they could use when disarmed or when Ezio escaped to somewhere they could not follow.

Trivia

• Historically, the Varangians Hailed from Scandinavia and parts of Medieval Russia and after 1066, from England as well, and from the 9th to 14th century, served as the personal guard of the Byzantine Emperor, functioning similarly to the Janissaries, who were the personal guard of the Ottoman Sultan.
• Historically, the Varangians wielded two handed Danish Axes, making them more akin to Brutes than Seekers
• In the artbook of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, concept art of the Varangians show that they were supposed to wield one handed swords, just like any normal guard. Also in the artbook, they were labeled as "Paranoid" instead of Varangians.
• Looting or stealing from Varangians will give Ezio Smoke Screen Bombs or Smoke Decoy Bombs should his tactical or diversionary pouches be empty.
• Varangians are the only guards you cannot counter.
