Ezio Auditore killing a Varangian with his Hookblade

The Varangians were guards in Constantinople. Similarly to the Almogavars, they were Byzantine guards. They acted much like the Seekers in Rome, as they fought with halberds and spears. They also wielded pistols that they could use when disarmed.

Trivia

  • Historically, the Varangians were Scandinavians, and from the 9th to 14th century, served as the personal guard of the Byzantine Emperor, functioning similarly to the Janissaries, who were the personal guard of the Ottoman Sultan.
